Scared of Failing NEET 2022, Tamil Nadu aspirant commits suicide

Chennai: In an unfortunate incident, a 19-year-old aspirant, scared of failing in NEET 2022, has committed suicide. The candidate was found hanging from the ceiling of his house.

According to a PTI report, the 19-year-old medical aspirant, P Dhanush allegedly died by suicide in his house in Choolaimedu on Thursday as he was depressed over being unable to choose the right path in education.

"The student, who wanted to become a doctor, hung himself when he was alone at home," the police informed. "Before taking the extreme measure he had put out a video message to his friends that he had decided to end his life," they stated.

''No one is responsible for my death. I wanted to become a doctor... became depressed as I could not choose the right path in education,'' he said in the video.

His parents, daily wage earners, found him hanging from the ceiling of their house when they returned. He was rushed to the hospital but it was already too late. The body was kept for post-mortem and has been returned to the family for last rites.

His mother, a housemaid, returned home only to find her son hanging. He was immediately rushed to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared him dead, adds PTI.

The aspirant had passed his 12th standard exams in 2020 and was preparing for NEET 2022. He had also appeared for the NEET 2021 Examination but failed, reports Times now.

A case was registered and an investigation is on, they added.

More than 20 medical aspirants, including board toppers, have died by suicide over the last few years in Tamil Nadu after failing to secure good marks in NEET for admission to government colleges.

The state of Tamil Nadu strongly opposes NEET, contending that the system favours only those who can afford private coaching. The state government claims the test puts the poor and rural students at a disadvantage.

Earlier, the Tamil Nadu Assembly Bill seeking an exemption to the state from the ambit of the National Entrance-cum-Eligibility Test, NEET had been sent to the Centre for presidential assent by Governor R N Ravi.

Before this, the CM had written to the Governor of the State, Thiru. R.N. Ravi urged him to forward the bill scrapping the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) to the Government of India.

NEET is the only entrance examination for MBBS and BDS admissions to a medical/ dental college in India. Each year, lakhs of candidates who aspire to become doctors appear for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test. In 2021, over 16 lakh had appeared for the exam. This year, the number has increased to 18 lakh.

The candidates have been demanding postponement of the exam, however, the education ministry has dismissed any chances of deferment.

Meanwhile, even though the aspirants are keen on deferring the exam, the NTA (National Testing Agency) has released advance Intimation for Allotment of Examination City to the Applicants of NEET 2022.

National Testing Agency is conducting the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (UG) at different Centres located in 546 cities throughout the country and 14 Cities in Outside India on 17 July 2022 (Sunday) from 02:00 P.M. to 05:20 P.M.
