Lucknow: After its initial denial, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has granted the letter of permission (LoP) to seven new medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh.

Further, the Apex Medical Education Regulatory Body has also allowed to increase the MBBS seats in two existing medical colleges in the State on Wednesday.

The new medical colleges that have received the NMC nod are situated in Bijnor, Bulandshahr, Kushinagar, Pilibhit, Sultanpur, Kanpur Dehat and Lalitpur districts and together they have an intake capacity of 600 MBBS seats. Further, the government medical colleges in Agra and Meerut have received the NMC permission for an increase of MBBS seats by 72 and 50 seats respectively, HT has reported.

This comes after recently the Commission denied granting permission to 13 new proposed medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh. These 13 new medical colleges were developed in Sultanpur, Kushinagar, Kaushambi, Kanpur Dehat, Lalitpur, Pilibhit, Auraiya, Sonbhadra, Bulandshahr, Gonda, Bijnor, Chandauli and Lakhimpur Kheri districts.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that NMC had denied granting its nod to these new institutes after shortcomings were pointed out during the inspection, including deficiencies in the infrastructure and faculty strength.

After receiving the Letter of Disapproval from NMC for 13 newly established medical colleges, the Uttar Pradesh Government requested the Apex Medical Commission to authorize the commencement of MBBS courses at these institutes for the 2024-2025 academic session.

As per the latest media report by Hindustan Times, following the appeals, NMC has granted permission to seven new medical colleges to run classes from the current academic session. Commenting on the matter, the Director General of Medical Education (DGME) Kinjal Singh told the Daily, "LoP (letter of permission) has been issued for the autonomous state medical colleges in Bijnor, Bulandshahr, Kushinagar, Pilibhit, Sultanpur, Kanpur Dehat and Lalitpur collectively having 600 MBBS seats. Additionally, the government medical colleges in Agra and Meerut have had their seat counts increased by 72 and 50, respectively, bringing the total to 200 seats at the Agra Medical College and 150 seats at the Meerut Medical College."

DGME Kinjal Singh further informed HT that the PPP-mode medical colleges in Shamli, Maharajganj, and Sambhal have received the LoPs for 150, 150 and 50 MBBS seats respectively.

Among these newly approved medical colleges, the institutes in Maharajganj, Shamli, and Sambhal are set up under the public-private-partnership (PPP) mode. The Commission has also approved an increase of MBBS seats at a private medical college in Hapur.

While NMC has granted 7 out of 13 proposed medical colleges, an appeal will be made to the Commission for the remaining six medical colleges, the State Government mentioned in a Press Statement, adding that if all goes as planned, these colleges will receive their LoPs soon.

Therefore, the counselling for admission to MBBS courses, that is scheduled to commence in August, will be conducted on 10,500 MBBS seats across the government, private and PPP model medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh, the Daily has reported.

Last year, altogether 3,828 MBBS seats were available for MBBS admission in the government medical colleges. For the academic year 2024-2025, this number has increased by 722, taking the total number of seats to 4550 seats.

While previously the private sector had 5,450 MBS seats, after the increase of 150 MBBS seats, there are 5600 MBBS seats available for admission in the private medical colleges. Further, 350 MBBS seats will be available for counselling in the three new PPP-mode medical colleges, informed the DGME.
