Bihar Shocker: Govt Doctors perform vasectomy on 32-year-old man suffering from hydrocele
Kaimur: In an alleged case of medical negligence, the doctors at the Chainpur primary health centre reportedly performed vasectomy surgery instead of hydrocele operation on a 32-year-old man who claimed to be unmarried from Bihar's Kaimur district on 15th February.
The patient, identified as Manaka Yadav, a resident of Jagaria village from south-west Kaimur district, who was supposed to get married in a few weeks, said that he was shocked when the doctor operating on him informed him about the successful vasectomy surgery. The doctor further advised him to go to a private hospital for a hydrocele operation.
He had gone to the health centre after a local Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) worker suggested him about it. The operation left Yadav and his family members in shock, who later a lodged a police complaint against the doctors of the primary health centre.
"I was suffering from hydrocele. On the suggestion of Asha workers, we decided to get it operated. Accordingly, I was admitted to the hospital in Chainpur, where the doctors performed a wrong surgery on me," said Yadav.
"I was supposed to get married in a few weeks time. But how can I marry now? They have spoilt my life. We have lodged a written complaint against the doctors with the local police," Yadav said. Yadav stated that he is unaware about signing a consent form for his vasectomy operation. Speaking to the Times of India, he said, "My world came crashing down when I was told that my 'nasbandi' (vasectomy) operation was successful. Now, who will marry me?"
"My son was suffering from a hydrocele problem. But the doctors performed a vasectomy surgery. He is yet to get married... The doctors have ruined his life. I want the authorities to take stringent action against the accused," said Ram Dahin Singh Yadav, the father of the patient. Yadav and his family lodged a police complaint against the doctors of the primary health centre following the incident.
The hospital records, however, show that Yadav is married. Further, the ASHA worker who had suggested him to go to the health centre had signed a printed statement which stated, "I am aware of the fact that the beneficiary is married and he has a child who is more than a year old."
The doctors at the primary health centre claimed that they had informed the patient about the vasectomy procedure which was carried out after his approval. Local civil surgeon Dr Meena Kumari said that a three-member committee was formed to investigate the incident which is headed by the district immunisation officer Dr R K Chaudhary.
The inquiry team is required to submit the report within 24 hours. The civil surgeon alleged that the man had claimed to be married and had come to the hospital for both hydrocele and vasectomy surgeries.
Dr Sunil Kumar, medical in-charge of Chainpur community health centre said, "He had married twice but was deserted by both his wives." The medical officer added, "We conducted an investigation at our own level and came to know from local villagers that he (victim) is already married."
Speaking to IANS about conducting a probe, Kumar said, "The matter has come to our notice and a probe is on. We will submit a report with the health department. Necessary action will be taken against anyone found guilty."
