12 Jharkhand Assistant Professors face action for not joining Govt Medical Colleges

Jharkhand: The Jharkhand government has initiated disciplinary proceedings against 12 Assistant Professors appointed at government medical colleges across the state for reportedly failing to join their assigned posts despite being issued appointment letters.
The Department of Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare has issued a final public notice directing the doctors to submit their explanations by July 28, 2026. The department has warned that failure to respond within the stipulated deadline will result in the immediate cancellation of their appointments.
The action pertains to appointments at several government medical colleges, including institutions in Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Hazaribagh, Palamu and Dumka. Among those named is an Assistant Professor appointed to the Dental Department of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Medical College Hospital, Jamshedpur, who has reportedly not assumed charge despite considerable time having elapsed since the appointment.
The move comes amid an ongoing shortage of teaching faculty at government medical colleges in the state. At MGM Medical College, the lack of faculty has reportedly been flagged during inspections by the National Medical Commission (NMC), with the vacancies affecting both academic activities and patient care, particularly in specialised departments.
Timely joining of appointed teaching staff is considered essential for maintaining faculty strength, meeting regulatory requirements, and ensuring uninterrupted medical education and patient care in state-run institutions. Vacant teaching posts can also impact compliance with National Medical Commission (NMC) norms.
According to The Avenue Mail, the Health Department has clarified that no claims or explanations will be accepted after July 28. If the concerned doctors fail to submit their responses along with supporting documents by the deadline, the government will proceed with cancelling their appointments.
