80-year-old homoeopathic doctor ends life, wife critical after consuming poison

Suicide
Nagpur: In a tragic incident, an 80-year-old homeopathy doctor allegedly died by suicide while his 70-year-old wife is battling for her life after the elderly couple consumed poison at their residence in Samarth Nagari. The couple lived alone and were reportedly suffering from health problems and struggling emotionally due to their unfulfilled dreams for their children and grandchildren.
According to police, the duo allegedly consumed poison in what appears to be a suicide pact. The doctor was found unconscious on the porch of their home, with froth coming from his mouth. He was rushed to AIIMS Hospital, where he was declared dead. His wife found in a critical condition, was taken to GB Hospital in Ambazari for treatment and is currently in critical condition.

Three suicide notes written by the doctor's handwriting were recovered from the house by the police, one addressed to the police and the other two to their son and married daughter. In the note left for the police, the couple made it clear that no one should be held responsible for their decision to end their lives. The other notes reflected their disappointment over their deteriorating health and the pain of not being able to see their dreams fulfilled.
As per a TOI media report, the incident came to light around 8 am when a neighbour called Shilpa Harne, the couple's daughter-in-law, who resides in Bhilai. She immediately alerted her mother's brother, Raju Tivaskar, a 56-year-old furniture businessman from Srihari Nagar. Tivaskar rushed to the couple's residence, where a crowd had already gathered, and found the doctor lying unconscious on the porch, with froth coming out from his mouth.
Later, the police were informed and reached the spot and began investigating the scene. During the preliminary investigation, the police found two plastic glasses near the couple, indicating poison consumption and later recovered two empty 100 ml aluminium bottles of Tafgor insecticide from the dustbin. The bottles have been sent to the Regional Forensic Science Laboratory for analysis.
After taking both the couple to different hospitals, the house was locked from the outside, with the key hanging on the door. Later, when the police went in for preliminary investigation, they found the suicide notes in a white envelope kept on the sofa.
In the suicide notes, the couple expressed hope about their grandsons cracking competitive exams to achieve their dream of becoming an IAS officer and a chartered accountant. They also expressed their gratitude towards their son and married daughter for looking after their medical needs despite their busy schedules. The note further cited their deteriorating health and unfulfilled dreams for their son, Sudhir Harne, an accountant at Bhilai Steel Plant, and their daughter.
A case has been registered by the police, and an investigation is underway.
