88 House Surgeons posts vacant: Doctors Question Punjab Health Department order Preferring GMCs

Faridkot: Controversy has erupted over the Punjab Health Department's decision of filling up 88 vacant posts of house surgeons in the State hospitals as the order gave preference to MBBS candidates belonging to three government medical colleges in Punjab.

Apart from this, the doctors have also questioned the low remuneration and the brief service period of the concerned job. As per the order, the doctors employed for the posts will get Rs 30,000 as monthly remuneration and their service period has been fixed as six months, adds The Tribune.

As per the order issued by Dr Gurindervir Singh, former director of the department, after the MBBS graduates from three specific government institutes, preference will be given to the students of private medical colleges.

Although the candidates are calling the rules to be illogical and discriminatory in nature, Dr Singh, who issued the order two days before his removal from the post this week justified the norms. He claimed that previously, while hiring house surgeons in government hospitals, candidates from government medical colleges had always been given the first preference.

However, candidates are not so happy with this as they have claimed that the rules are tilted in favour of MBBS-qualified candidates belonging to Government medical colleges in the State.

While commenting on the matter, a doctor told The Tribune, "It is ridiculous the government is giving preference to students of one medical college over those of other colleges affiliated with the same medical university."
