Agra: Senior surgeon goes missing, police launches search operation

Agra: A senior surgeon went missing under mysterious circumstances after he left home for his nursing home in trans-Yamuna area on Tuesday night, while his car was found a day later at a 70km distance from Dholpur district of neighboring Rajasthan.

An FIR was registered in this connection at Itimad-ud-Daula police station of Agra, following which combing operation in Chambal ravines were launched by the Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan police as well who crossed river and searched over a dozen villages on Wednesday to trace the missing doctor.

Cops are speculating that the doctor must have been honey-trapped by a gang and abducted. However, the doctor's family confirmed that they did not received any call for ransom from the abductors till Wednesday night.

The doctor has been identified as a 60-year-old owner of a hospital who left home on Tuesday evening at 6:45 p.m. in his car but when he did not return home till late night, his wife who is a gynecologist approached the police and filed the complaint of the missing doctor.

The wife further mentioned in her complaint that the nursing home is just 600-metre from their residence and the doctor was travelling by his Baleno car and had a mobile phone with him but it was switched off.

Circle officer (CO) of Chatta in Agra, Deeksha Singh, told HT, "Efforts are on to trace the missing doctor who left home for his nursing home on Tuesday night, but did not reach the hospital. The mobile phone of Dr Umakant Gupta is switched off, but its last location has been traced at Saiyyan in outskirts of city. Wife of the missing doctor has lodged an FIR of missing at Itimad-ud-Daula police station."

"CCTV footages are being checked. Police have also contacted Rajasthan police of the border district as last location Saiyyan falls on way to Rajasthan," the CO added.

Investigating the case, cops considered some instances of previous such cases in the region while going through the CCTV footages. According to a recent media report in Times of India, a case under section 364 of IPC (kidnapping for ransom) has been lodged against unidentified persons at Etmauddaula police station of Agra.

Police traced the doctor's last location near Saiya village of Agra. The Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh police teams started searching the ravines of Chambal to trace the doctor. Police conducted an intensive combing operation across the gharial-infested Chambal river as well.

Finally, they got a lead in the case after a head constable of Dholpur police late on Tuesday night spotted a suspicious car that was zipping in and out of small lanes as if attempting to avoid police checkpoints, SP Shekhawat told TOI. The teams followed the car and arrested the driver, who admitted to have abducted the doctor with the latter's car from Agra.

"During interrogation, the driver revealed that a woman of their gang had honey-trapped the doctor for the abduction. The doctor was present in the car with the woman when the accused barged in, took him into the ravines and, after dropping him there, fled in the same car," Shekhawat said.

Upon further interrogation which continued during the early hours of Wednesday till a police force from neighbouring UP arrived, Dholpur police learned that the doctor was moved into the Chambal valley after which they searched multiple hamlets.

Police are still investigating the case to trace the abductors and rescue the doctor.
