AIIMS Bhubaneswar doctor arrested for duping daughter of patient on pretext of marriage
The arrest was made after the father of the 26-year-old woman lodged a complaint, alleging that the doctor established a physical relationship with her on the promise of marriage and later got engaged with another woman from his state, West Bengal.
Bhubaneswar: A doctor of the state-run All Indian Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhubaneswar was arrested under the charges of abortion and cheating after a woman accused him of allegedly cheating and making her pregnant on the pretext of marriage.
The accused is a 33-year-old doctor in the cardiology department of AIIMS in Bhubaneswar and used to stay at the AIIMS Housing Complex in Khandagiri. He allegedly first met the complainant in December 2020 when she used to visit the hospital with her father who is undergoing treatment there.
The accused was apprehended on Tuesday by Mahila Police of the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Commissionerate, a senior officer said.
The arrest was made after the father of the 26-year-old woman lodged a complaint, alleging that the doctor established a physical relationship with her on the promise of marriage and later got engaged with another woman from his state, West Bengal.
As per a media report in Kalinga TV, the doctor had cheated the woman to get involved in a physical relationship with him by promising to marry her. The woman said that the doctor forced her to undergo an abortion after she got pregnant twice, saying that he was not ready for marriage and needed more time. However, she began doubting the doctor after the latter failed to pick up her phone calls.
The woman, however got to know about the engagement of the doctor with another person in West Bengal after enquiring about him with other fellow doctors. The doctor reportedly refused to accept her when she confronted her about the marriage. This also resulted in an argument between both where the doctor threatened her with dire consequences if she told anyone about them, reports The New Indian Express.
The woman eventually registered a complaint with the Mahila police station, following which the police filed a complaint under sections 493,417,323,420 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). IIC Santoshini Behera told India Today, "Cheating charges have been pressed against the doctor as he betrayed the woman after promising to marry her."
The police then questioned the doctor and subsequently arrested him.
