Patna: In an unfortunate incident, a junior resident doctor and a first-year postgraduate student in the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Patna, allegedly committed suicide in his hostel room.

Doctors at the institute reported that the medico injected a high dose of anaesthetic drug.

While the police suspect the case to be a suicide, the exact reason behind his death remains unclear. As per their statement, the medico, who was a native of Odisha, was found lying unconscious on the bed under mysterious circumstances.

No suicide note was recovered from the scene. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and the exact cause of death will only be determined after the report is released.

As per TOI media report, the incident came to light when the doctor's colleagues went to his room and found the door locked from the inside. Despite repeatedly calling out and knocking, there was no response. Concerned, they alerted the hospital administration.

Around 1 p.m., the police were informed and promptly arrived at the scene. They broke open the door and found the doctor lying unconscious on his bed. He was immediately rushed to the emergency ward, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Speaking to PTI, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) (Phulwarisharif-1) Sushil Kumar said, “Police received a call that the deceased had not opened his room in hostel number 5 since morning. His room was locked from the inside. Police immediately reached the spot, and other administrative officials were also called, and they broke into the room around 1 p.m. The deceased was found lying on the bed. He was taken to the emergency ward where doctors declared him brought dead."

Following this, a team from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) was called to the spot to gather evidence. Police have begun probing all possible angles — including foul play, suicide, or a possible medical emergency.

Kumar told TOI, "An inquest is being prepared. After this, a postmortem will be conducted, and other technical evidence will be collected. The authorities have not yet provided any clear information, but the cause of death will be known by the FSL and postmortem reports."

Meanwhile, resident doctors and students of AIIMS alleged that the administration attempted to suppress the incident. They claimed that the authorities threatened the residents into silence and failed to properly attend to the deceased’s family, who were reportedly mistreated upon their arrival. As a result, they are deeply anguished by the institutional and said that they have lost their trust in the AIIMS Patna administration.

Seeking justice for the deceased doctor, the resident doctors and students submitted a letter to the Union Health Minister demanding a transparent and independent enquiry into his death.

The letter mentioned that an independent enquiry committee should be formulated, consisting of senior doctors from AIIMS Patna and other institutes, junior resident representatives from AIIMS Patna, concerned Police officials, family members of the deceased and a mental health expert.

"The committee must submit its report within 7 days of formulation," said the doctors in the letter.

They further demanded that the institute should take responsibility for the mistreatment of the deceased's family and report to them with transparency. An official statement as well as an address to the AIIMS Patna community must be made by the respected Executive Director of AIIMS Patna at the earliest, alleged the doctors and the students.

"The committee must take input from the junior residents regarding their grievances and the changes in the work culture that should be enforced to avoid such future occurrences. This must be followed by the release of an official notice by the AIIMS Patna administration to implement the suggested changes," the letter reads.
