Bhubaneswar: A woman medical officer working at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar was allegedly duped of Rs 1.30 lakh by a man posing as a fake doctor. The accused was later arrested by Mancheswar police on the charges of cheating and criminal intimidation.
According to news reports, the accused contacted the woman through a matrimonial website, claiming that he was a doctor employed in Pune. By projecting a false medical background, he managed to win the confidence of the woman and her family, underlining how professional trust played a key role in the alleged fraud.
Odisha TV reported that after establishing a relationship based on a fake identity, the accused reportedly sought financial help, stating that he needed money for the last rites of a friend’s mother. Trusting his explanation, the woman transferred Rs 1.30 lakh in three separate digital transactions. When she later asked for the money to be returned, the accused allegedly threatened her with serious consequences.
After realising that she was duped, she filed a formal complaint at Mancheswar police station, and an investigation was initiated. Investigation revealed that the accused does not possess any recognised medical qualification and is not a registered doctor. Officials also found that several criminal cases had previously been registered against him. Further inquiry is underway to determine whether he used similar tactics to deceive others, particularly by misusing the identity of a doctor.
This case is not an isolated one. Earlier, Medical Dialogues reported a case in which a Karnataka- based doctor was reportedly lost Rs 22 lakh to a sophisticated cyber fraud that involved promises of a huge monetary reward. The fraud began when a person claiming to be from abroad contacted the doctor, offering 25 lakh US dollars as appreciation for his work.
