Bogus BAMS degree racket: Two more quacks held in Uttarakhand

Dehradun: The special investigation team (SIT) of Dehradun police, in its ongoing probe, arrested two more fake Ayurveda practitioners in connection with the fake Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) degree racket on Wednesday.

A total of 14 arrests have been made in the case now, they added.

Ashfaq Ahmad aged 39 and Jyoti Kumari, aged 38 were arrested on Wednesday for buying fake degrees from the arrested mastermind of the racket Imlakh Khan, Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police Daleep Singh Kunwar said.

Ahmad ran a private Ayurveda clinic in Dehradun and Kumari at Bhagwanpur in Haridwar district with the fake BAMS degrees they had bought from Khan and were practicing in their respective clinics, he said.

Ahmad told the SIT that he had bought the fake BAMS degree from Khan for Rs 7 lakh.

"During the interrogation, one of the two accused, Ahmad, told police that he had a Diploma in Unani Medicine and Surgery degree before meeting Khan through one of his friends. He then bought the fake BAMS degree from him for Rs 7 lakh. Similarly, Kumari, during her interrogation, told that she used to work as a receptionist at a college in Saharanpur after completing her matric. While working there, she met Khan, who sold her fake Class 12 mark sheet for Rs 50,000 and later the fake BAMS degree," Kunwar told TOI.

Those arrested are among 36 fake Ayurveda practitioners in Uttarakhand, out of which eleven have already been arrested including Ahmad and Kumari.

Over 600 fake degrees and related certificates of universities in Delhi, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Karnataka and one Ukrainian university have been seized from Khan, a native of Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh, the SSP said.

It is being investigated whether Khan also dealt in fake medical degrees, he said.

Medical Dialogues team had recently reported about the arrest of the mastermind, who is allegedly the main accused of a fake Bachelor of Ayurvedic and Medicine Surgery (BAMS) degree case from Ajmer, Rajasthan and three staffers of Indian Medical Council (IMC), Uttarakhand for allegedly assisting him in completing the registration of those who bought the fake degrees from him.

According to the police, Imlakh, infamous as the biggest education mafia of Uttar Pradesh, was the mastermind of the gang of Ayurvedic doctors practicing in the state with fake degrees of Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS).

Earlier in January, two doctors with fake degrees of Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) and another accused who allegedly provided the certificates had been arrested by the Uttarakhand STF team.
