Villupuram: A government doctor’s house in Pudu Pillayarkuppam near Panruti was burgled last month, resulting in the arrest of five suspects and the recovery of 93 sovereigns worth of melted gold jewellery.
The accused were apprehended during a vehicle check on Sunday, August 3, by the Kadampuliyur police in Villupuram district.
The incident occurred on July 25 at the residence of a doctor working at the Government Villupuram Medical College and Hospital, when burglars broke into the house. The breakthrough came on Sunday during a routine vehicle check at Sathipattu on the Panruti-Kumbakonam Highway. The police intercepted an SUV carrying five men and discovered the melted jewellery amounting to 93 sovereigns.
Investigations by the police revealed the accused, identified as Suresh (37), Dinesh Kumar (30), Jegadeesan (31), Murugan (52), and Ashok (33), were involved in the burglary reported at Pudu Pillayarkuppam, reports the Hindu.
Speaking to the Hindu, the police said the accused had gained access to the house by breaking open the grill gate. After the loot, they had melted 93 sovereigns of jewellery and attempted to sell them in Kumbakonam when they were nabbed by the police.
