CIMS Bilaspur junior doctors go on strike after intern doctor alleges assault on duty
Doctor slappedBilaspur: Junior doctors at the Chhattisgarh Institute of Medical Sciences (CIMS) Bilaspur went on strike after a female intern doctor from the radiology department alleged that she was slapped twice by a technician while on duty.
The protesting doctors have made it clear that they will not end their strike until strict action is taken against the accused lab technician and they are assured of their safety. This strike is expected to disrupt hospital services.
The incident occurred in the radiology department, where the technician allegedly held the intern’s hand and asked if she knew her. Within seconds, the technician slapped her twice. The intern doctor said the situation became so serious that her senior had to take her to a cabin, where they locked themselves inside as the technician reportedly became aggressive.
The intern doctor further alleged that when the incident was reported to the hospital authorities, they did not take strict action against the accused. Instead, the administration reportedly described the technician as “mentally unwell” and said he was experiencing a manic episode at the time of the incident.
The doctors have accused the CIMS management of attempting to suppress the matter and pressuring the intern doctor to resume work, rather than ensuring her safety and initiating disciplinary action against the accused.
Angered by the alleged inaction, junior doctors at the institute launched an indefinite strike, demanding strict action against the technician and clear assurance of safety for doctors, especially women interns working in the hospital, reports Patrika.
Posting the matter on X, Dr Dhruv Chauhan, National Spokesperson of the Indian Medical Association Junior Doctors Network, said, "Today he dared to slap, tomorrow he will try to molest another woman. This is the level of harassment Indian women face silently."
