Doctors assaulted at RIMS Ranchi, resident doctors seek stronger security

Ranchi: In a disturbing incident, on-duty doctors at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) were allegedly assaulted by relatives of a patient who died during treatment, prompting resident doctors to suspend work for around two hours on Sunday.
The incident triggered concern among resident doctors, who demanded stronger security measures not only inside the hospital but also across the hospital premises.

According to RIMS Junior Doctors’ Association president Dr Jitendra Kumar, the patient was admitted on Sunday in a critical condition with severe pancreatitis. Despite efforts by the medical team, the patient's condition deteriorated, and he eventually collapsed at the surgery ward.
Following the patient's death, his attendants allegedly accused the doctors of negligence and attacked the on-duty doctors with sticks, Kumar said.
“The doctors suspended work for around two hours and resumed work after the authorities assured them of tighter safety measures. Theft and other untoward incidents are happening with doctors on the premises regularly,” Kumar said, reports TOI.
The incident has once again brought the issue of violence against healthcare workers into focus, with resident doctors calling for immediate and effective measures to prevent such incidents and ensure a safe working environment across the hospital premises. Such measures, they said, are essential to protect medical staff and enable them to discharge their duties without disruption.
Medical Dialogues had previously reported that on-duty doctors and hospital staff were allegedly assaulted, while hospital property was damaged at the emergency facility of Delhi’s Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital after the condition of a road accident victim deteriorated during treatment. The incident took place early Thursday after the patient's condition deteriorated while he was undergoing treatment at the emergency facility, which has been shifted to Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality Hospital in Tahirpur.
