Dr K Narayanasamy takes charge as vice chancellor of Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University
Chennai: Dr K Narayanasamy, senior hepatologist, has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of The Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University, Chennai, by Governor of Tamil Nadu R N Ravi on Monday.
He has been appointed for a period of three years with effect from the date of his assumption of office. Dr K Narayanasamy is currently the Dean of the Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital. He has 33 years of experience in the medical practice and has rich administrative experience of 13 years in various capacities as Medical Superintendent, State Nodal Officer of various Government Schemes, etc. He has also served as Dean of Chengalpattu Medical College and Dean of Madras Medical College.

He was in charge of the Government COVID Hospital in Guindy during the pandemic and was awarded by the Government of Tamil Nadu for his contribution during the pandemic. In order to take over as vice-chancellor, Dr Narayanasamy must be released from his retirement in a month.
Dr Narayanasamy also headed the Department of Hepatology at Madras Medical College from 2018 to 2022 as the director. He was instrumental in creating the Institute of Hepatobiliary Sciences (IHBS) at Madras Medical College and served as its director.
Narayanasamy succeeds Dr Sudha Seshayyan, who was the 10th vice chancellor of the university. Her tenure was between December 31, 2018 to December 30, 2022, the website of the university said.
Dr K Narayanasamy is among the three candidates whose name was suggested by the panel headed by former secretary V K Subburaj, who is the government nominee and convenor of the committee along with two other members anaesthetist Dr Vasanthi Vidhyasagran, the senate nominee and senior neurosurgeon Dr K Selvakumar, the governing council nominee in the third week of May.
Following this, the governor interviewed three candidates suggested by a search panel at Raj Bhavan on Monday and selected Dr Narayanasamy as the right person for the position.
Speaking to TOI, Dr Narayanasamy said, “My focus is to improve research. The university has several medical, dental and paramedical colleges affiliated. There is access to rich clinical data and scientists from both government and private colleges that can be used to epidemiology, clinical and outcome studies. They will give doctors more information about diseases they are treating and give evidence for a more effective health policy."
