This comes after an order issued on Tuesday (March 18, 2025) by Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma and Health Secretary Christina Z. Chongthu in this regard confirmed that Dr Reddy will serve a three-year term.
"In exercise of the powers conferred under section 12 read with section 48 of KNR University of Health Sciences Act, 1986 (Act No.6 of 1986), I, Jishnu Dev Varma, Chancellor of Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences, Warangal, hereby appoint Dr P.V.Nanda Kumar Reddy as the Vice-Chancellor of KNR University of Health Sciences, Warangal for a term of three years from the date of his appointment," reads the order as per SF report.
The Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences was established after the formation of the State of Telangana by adopting the Dr NTR University of Health Sciences Act vide G.O.M s No. 20 HM&FW (Cl) Department in 2014 with headquarters at Warangal. Dr B.Karunakar Reddy was appointed as the first vice-chancellor in 2015.
It has been 10 years since the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Health Sciences was last appointed and no other candidate was given the permanent position. Dr. Karunakar Reddy, initially appointed as the in-charge Vice-Chancellor for a one-year term, was later given a full-time position for five years, followed by a two-year extension under the University of Health Sciences Act. His extended tenure sparked legal and academic scrutiny, raising concerns over procedural irregularities.
As per The Hindu news report, the issue gained legal traction in 2022 when the Healthcare Reforms Doctors Association (HRDA) filed a petition in the Telangana High Court over the delay in appointing a new Vice-Chancellor. The High Court, in June 2023, directed the State government to clarify its position on the matter. Following the court’s order, the Telangana government invited applications for the post in June 2024 and appointed Dr. Nanda Kumar Reddy as the new Vice-Chancellor.
