Fake doctor arrested for providing allopathic treatment in Gujarat

Valsad: A man has been arrested in Gujarat’s Valsad district for allegedly practising allopathic medicine without holding a recognised medical qualification, amid concerns over unqualified medical practitioners operating across the state.

According to the news reports, the accused, who was residing near Valveri Phatak in Kaprada taluka, originally belonged to Bhatpurva Samuhi in Ghatampur taluka of Kanpur Nagar, Uttar Pradesh. He was allegedly treating patients from a rented house despite not possessing a recognised medical degree or the required registration to practise medicine.

The operation was carried out following directions from Surat Division Inspector General of Police Prem Veer Singh, Valsad Superintendent of Police Dr Yuvrajsinh Jadeja, and Assistant Superintendent of Police, Dharampur Division, Dr Sandeep T.

During patrol operations, Assistant Head Constable Ashishbhai Arjunbhai allegedly received information about an unauthorised medical practice being run near Valveri Phatak.

Acting on the information, a police team, accompanied by a medical officer from the Primary Health Centre at Rohiyal Jungle and a pharmacist, conducted a raid at a rented house belonging to Naranbhai Devrambhai.

Speaking to the Assam Tribune, police said the accused was found treating patients and administering allopathic and other medicines despite not possessing a medical degree. The police alleged that the practice could put human life and physical safety at risk. During the raid, officers recovered 31 different brands of allopathic medicines valued at Rs 53,751.20.

The accused was taken to Kaprada Police Station following the raid. Police registered an FIR under Section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 30 of the Medical Practitioners Act. The investigation will determine the extent of the alleged practice and whether other individuals were involved, reports Gujarat Samachar.

The Valsad case comes amid a wider crackdown on alleged bogus doctors across Gujarat. In recent months, police have reported several similar cases involving individuals accused of treating patients without recognised medical degrees or valid registration.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that a 58-year-old man posing as a doctor who allegedly treated patients for over two decades was arrested by the Anand police on Saturday in connection with a long-running illegal medical practice in Gujarat, allegedly endangering people's health.

Government data presented in the Gujarat Assembly in March highlighted the scale of the issue. Authorities said 2,724 complaints concerning alleged bogus doctors received between 2021 and 2023 had been investigated. Of these, 169 individuals were found to have fake degrees, while 154 FIRs were registered.

The latest arrest in Valsad is therefore part of a broader state-wide enforcement effort aimed at preventing people without recognised medical qualifications and registration from providing healthcare services.
