Quack arrested for running illegal medical practice for 20 years
Vadodara- A 58-year-old man posing as a doctor who allegedly treated patients for over two decades was arrested by the Anand police on Saturday in connection with a long-running illegal medical practice in Gujarat, allegedly endangering people's health.
Police alleged that despite not having the necessary qualifications and registration, he had been examining patients, prescribing medicines and providing treatment.
The Local Crime Branch (LCB) of the Anand Police conducted this operation against unqualified medical practitioners, acting on the instructions of senior police officials.
According to the TOI news report, during the operation, the police identified a resident of Borsad, who was allegedly running a medical practice from his home and posing as a doctor. Following this, a team of LCB officers, accompanied by a government medical officer, raided the premises.
A search of his premises led to the seizure of medicines used for treatment and related materials. Officials seized medicines and medical supplies worth ₹3,595, along with ₹955 in cash; the total value of the seized items was approximately ₹4,550.
When asked about a valid registration certificate from the Gujarat Medical Council, the accused failed to produce one, which is mandatory for practising medicine.
A case was registered at the Anand Rural Police Station under Sections 30 and 35 of the Gujarat Medical Practitioners' Act, 1963. The police are now investigating the extent of the accused's activities and whether others were involved.
Medical Dialogues had recently reported a similar case where a fake doctor, arrested in 2023 and later granted bail by the Gauhati High Court in a case involving illegal medical practice and impersonation of a qualified medical professional, has once again been booked after authorities alleged that he continued such activities.
The Pragjyotishpur Police Station has registered a new case against the accused under Sections 125, 234, 272, 318(4), 319(2), and 340(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
