Fake Gynaecologist arrested at Silchar Medical College Hospital

Fake doctor
Silchar: In a shocking incident, a 23-year-old man with no medical qualifications was arrested on Tuesday for impersonating a gynaecologist at the government-run Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH).
According to the news reports, the accused, a resident of Katigorah, had reportedly been entering the hospital wearing a white coat and treating patients in the gynaecology OPD since August 29. His deception was finally uncovered when hospital staff grew suspicious of his frequent visits after 2 PM and alerted authorities.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, Cachar senior superintendent of police (SSP) Numal Mahatta said, “The individual had no medical qualifications but was impersonating a gynaecologist at SMCH. He has been apprehended, and lawful action has been initiated.”
Dr Bhaskar Gupta, SMCH principal, said the staff noticed the suspect visiting the ward after 2 pm every day, dressed as a doctor. “We noticed him and informed the police. After his arrest today, we lodged a First Information Report (FIR),” he said, adding that Barbhuiya was never enrolled as a doctor at the hospital, reports the Hindustan Times.
This incident is not an isolated one. The recurrence of such cases has prompted fears of a larger, organized racket supplying fake medical degrees in the Barak Valley region.
During a recent visit to Silchar, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma acknowledged the growing concern, stating that there may be a “well-organized network” involved in issuing fraudulent degrees for hefty sums of money.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that for the past 10 years, a man from Assam’s Sribhumi district had been impersonating as an obstetrician and gynaecologist, defrauding patients, assisting in around 50 cesarean sections and other gynaecological surgeries, and handling several pregnancy cases at a private hospital in Silchar since 2016.
