Gurugram: A case has been registered against a doctor and three others in connection with an alleged illegal sex determination racket busted at a Faridabad hospital, police said on Tuesday.
The racket was reportedly uncovered after a pregnant woman posed as a customer during a decoy operation conducted by the Gurugram health officials, accompanied by police.
Following a tip-off about sex determination tests and female foeticide, a team from the Gurugram health department, accompanied by police, launched an operation that exposed what officials described as a large network involved in the illegal practice.
According to the PTI report, the team raided Lilavati Hospital in NIT Faridabad after receiving information that some individuals were allegedly carrying out fetal sex determination tests for money.
According to police, the Gurugram Civil Surgeon’s office received information that people in Faridabad were offering illegal sex determination tests on unborn babies in exchange for money. Following this, the health department and police formed a team and initiated an operation.
As part of the operation, a pregnant woman was sent as a decoy customer. The accused allegedly demanded Rs 32,000 to conduct the test and then took her from Faridabad to Gurugram and later to Palwal, where the sex of the fetus was allegedly determined using an ultrasound machine, officials added.
During the examination, the doctor allegedly informed her that the fetus was female. Soon after the confirmation, the raiding team intervened and took action against those involved.
Dr Lokveer, Civil Surgeon, Gurugram, said fetal sex determination and female foeticide are serious crimes against society and that strict action will continue against those engaged in such activities.
Police said cash, mobile phones, documents and medical records were recovered during the operation.
An FIR has been registered under various sections of the PCPNDT Act and the BNS against the four accused, reports PTI.
“We are investigating the entire network and will identify other individuals involved in this illegal trade,” a senior police officer said.
