GMC Rajouri Orthopaedic surgeon Dr Shalinder Sharma dies of cardiac arrest
Srinagar: In an unfortunate incident, renowned Orthopaedic surgeon, associate professor and Head of Department, Orthopaedics, Government Medical College (GMC) Rajouri, Dr Shalinder Sharma, died from a massive heart attack on Wednesday.
According to media reports, Dr Sharma was at his house when he suffered a massive heart attack late at night on Tuesday and was brought to GMC during predawn, said Dr Mehmood H Bajar, Medical Superintendent of GMC Associated Hospital Rajouri.
Although a team of doctors gave their best efforts to save Dr Sharma, he could not be revived and passed away on Wednesday morning.
Explaining the matter in depth, Dr Mehmood H Bajar told GK, “He was brought to GMC's emergency room in an unconscious condition due to cardiac arrest during the intervening night of January 17 and 18. His condition was deteriorating. Immediately a team of doctors from medicine, anaesthesia, and surgery was pressed into the service to treat the senior doctor. Best possible efforts were made for over four hours but Dr Shalinder passed away at around 4:30 am.”

His last rites were held at Jawahar Nagar, where the entire medical fraternity in Jammu along with experts from other professions and family and relatives expressed their condolences and mourned for Dr Sharma.
In memory of Dr Sharma, a condolence meeting was held by doctors and paramedical staff of Government Medical College Rajouri at the hospital premises. Two minutes of silence were observed by staff members of the hospital and floral tributes were paid to Dr Shalinder Sharma.
As a renowned surgeon throughout the Jammu region, Dr Sharma was well known for his outstanding service to the healthcare field. Many recalled him as an exceptional doctor with a great personality.
Commenting on the matter, Dr Mehmood said, “Dr Shalinder was a reputed surgeon in his field and was known for his dedication across the Jammu region, particularly in Rajouri and Poonch districts. He had conducted many complicated surgeries in GMC Associated Hospital Rajouri, earning applause from his patients and the medical fraternity."
Expressing deepest condolences for Dr Sharma, District Magistrate of Rajouri IAS, Vikas Kundal said “Rajouri lost a true hero today. Dr Shalinder Sharma was an exceptional doctor, a compassionate human being and much more. May the departed soul rest in peace.”
Former Chief Minister and NC leader, Omar Abdullah tweeted, "I am very sorry to hear about the demise of HoD Orthopaedics of Govt Medical College Rajouri, Dr Shalinder Sharma. A renowned expert in his field and his loss will be deeply felt. May he rest in peace & his loved ones find strength at this difficult time."
Ex Cabinet Minister J&K and Vice President of J&K Apni Party said “Extremely shocking to know about the untimely demise of Dr Shalinder Sharma ji orthopedic Surgeon GMC Rajouri. He was nice, humble, down-to-earth, and helpful to the people. A big loss for the entire area. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, RIP.”
Ex-General Secretary Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) and Consultant Radiologist in Jk-HME said “Dr Shalinder Sharma, HoD Orthopedics, GMC Rajouri has passed away. The man who saved so many lives in Rajouri hospital breathed his last in this hospital only. Your loss is a great loss to society. You will be remembered for ages to come. May ur soul rest in peace.”
Secretary H&ME Department Bhupinder Kumar IAS has expressed his condolences on the demise of Dr Shailender Sharma HoD(Orthopaedics) at GMC Rajouri terming him a human being par excellence. Indeed a great loss to the Medical fraternity and healthcare system.
As a mark of respect to Dr Sharma’s departed soul, many parts of Rajouri were closed, including some private hospitals. Duty work was also suspended on Wednesday by the Legal fraternity of the district court complex Rajouri under the banner of the Bar Association.
