Surat: In an unfortunate incident, a second-year postgraduate radiology student of Government Medical College (GMC), Surat, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan using a bedsheet in his hostel room.
The deceased medico, a native of Bengaluru, was a meritorious student who had secured admission to a postgraduate program at GMC Surat and was serving as a doctor at the state-run New Civil Hospital (NCH).
While the exact cause of his death remains unclear and is still under investigation, police have revealed that the student had been dealing with psychiatric issues and had been undergoing treatment since 2023, but he had not disclosed this to his family.

Sources at GMC told TOI that the student had reportedly been involved in a recent argument with a female colleague at the Civil Hospital, though the nature and details of the argument remain unclear.
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon after the student informed his friends that he would join them for dinner. Instead, he went to his room, locked himself in and ended his life. He was reportedly set to travel to his hometown later that day, but his hostel mates found him hanging from the ceiling fan and immediately rushed him to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Later, the hostel authorities informed the police and a preliminary investigation was conducted. During the investigation in the deceased's room, the police found his medical files and prescriptions, which indicated that he had been receiving psychiatric care since 2023.
A police officer told TOI, "His room was in disarray, with books, clothes, and personal belongings scattered. The documents we found confirm that he was under treatment for psychiatric issues, which he had not disclosed to his family."
The medico was described as having a history of aggressive behaviour and frequent arguments with fellow students, teachers and seniors. On the morning of the incident, one of his teachers contacted his family to express concern about his behaviour, adds the daily.
After a postmortem was completed, the police handed over the body to his family members and registered a case in this regard. An investigation is underway to determine the exact reason behind his death.
