Gujarat Gynaecologist loses license for 6 months after death of woman, child during delivery
Ahmedabad: A Gujarat-based gynaecologist lost her license for six months after a woman, who had undergone two cesarean sections, was not operated on during her third pregnancy leading to the death of the mother and the child.
Gujarat Medical Council (GMC) has taken the decisive step of suspending the medical license of a gynaecologist based in Kadi.
On July 26, 2022, a female patient was admitted to the doctor's hospital. Unfortunately, she was not present at the time, and a critical decision had to be made regarding the patient's care. As a result of this determination, the Gujarat Medical Council suspended a doctor's medical license for six months.
''The doctor had suggested that like the previous two deliveries, the third should be through caesarean-section,'' the statement quoted the police complaint as saying.
The newborn did not survive this ordeal. The mother's condition also deteriorated rapidly, necessitating her transfer to Bhagyoday Hospital, where she subsequently succumbed to her injuries.
In the aftermath of this incident, calls for accountability and justice resounded. Responding to these demands, a committee was convened, comprising Dr Harsh Doshi, professor and head of GCS Medical College, Dr Parul Shah, professor and head of NHL Medical College, and Dr Yamini Trivedi, professor and head of LG Hospital.
The committee undertook a comprehensive investigation and, based on its findings, determined that conducting an operation for the delivery of the child could have potentially saved both lives.
The situation came to light after the husband of the deceased filed a complaint at the police station against the doctor on October 27, 2022.
Issuing a statement, GMC said "The doctor had suggested that like the previous two deliveries, the third too should be through Caesarean-section. He gave the couple July 26, 2022, as the due date. Lakshmi, however, was rushed to his hospital late on July 25 night after developing labour pain and admitted at around 12.15 a.m.
"The night staff present told them that she was absent and Dr Ishrat, an Ayurvedic doctor, had spoken to him over the phone. After this Lakshmi was administered an injection. The patient and her husband repeatedly asked the night staff to call the doctor to the hospital and even informed them about the doctor's suggestion of a C-section procedure. However, the staff went ahead with a normal childbirth process and the child was stillborn," TOI reports.
