Gujarat: Medical Superintendent arrested for allegedly taking Rs 40k bribe from PG medical students under DRP

bribe
Ahmedabad: The Medical Superintendent of a Civil Hospital in Devgadh Baria, Dahod, has recently been arrested by the State Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for allegedly demanding and receiving a bribe from postgraduate medical students deputed to his hospital for rural service.
It was alleged that the 59-year-old doctor demanded a bribe from the PG medicos working in the institute headed by him during their mandatory District Residency Programme (DRP), reportedly under the pretext of "not harassing" them.
From eight students, who were appointed to the said hospital, the accused doctor allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 5,000 per student, totalling Rs 40,000. In exchange, he allegedly assigned them favourable duties and ensured that they would not be harassed during their service.
After arresting the Medical Superintendent, as quoted by The Indian Express, ACB issued a statement on Tuesday stating, "A total of eight students were appointed to J S Chauhan Government Civil Hospital, Devgadh Baria, Dahod, under the District Residency Programme (DRP). The accused demanded a bribe of Rs 40,000 in total, calculated at Rs 5,000 per student, from the eight students in exchange for assigning favourable duties and ensuring they would not be harassed during their service."

According to an Indian Express report, the matter came to light after one of the students refused to pay the bribe and approached the Gandhinagar ACB. Following this, the officials set a trap to nab the accused doctor.
Reportedly, a team of the anti-corruption agency set a trap at the government staff quarters of the officer on Monday evening and caught him red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 40,000 from the complainant student, ACB said. Following this, the accused doctor was arrested. Currently, the matter is being investigated.
Commenting on the matter, Ashutosh Kumar, Assistant Director of ACB, Gandhinagar Unit, told TOI, "The students were undergoing a district residency programme under Dr ***. They had to do certain tasks during the programme. The accused demanded money from them by promising to give them easier tasks."
"Dr *** also promised not to harass them while on duty. The students were not willing to pay the money and they approached the ACB," Parmar added.
The District Residency Programme is a mandatory rotational training requirement prescribed by the National Medical Commission (NMC), designed to give postgraduate medical students hands-on clinical and public health experience at district and sub-district hospitals across the state. Under this programme, the PG medicos have to undergo 3 months of compulsory posting in a public sector district hospital.
