Guwahati Doctor Arrested for Medical Equipment Fraud

Guwahati: A 32-year-old doctor was arrested by Dispur Police for allegedly masterminding a widespread fraud involving forged government work orders for medical equipment, duping several individuals and businesses out of lakhs of rupees.

The accused, a resident of Bishnunagar on VIP Road in Guwahati, had been on the run since August 2023. Despite holding medical credentials, he allegedly exploited his professional background to create an elaborate ruse, producing fake government documents that promised lucrative supply contracts for medical goods.

The case came to light when Md. Samim Ali, a resident of FA Ahmed Nagar in Guwahati, filed an FIR alleging that the doctor promised a lucrative government supply contract and collected Rs 4 lakh under false pretences. Further investigation revealed that the doctor used similar schemes to defraud multiple individuals, channelling the ill-gotten funds through his wife’s bank account.

Authorities have confirmed that multiple FIRs have been registered against him at various police stations across Assam, suggesting the scam’s extensive reach. Several medical professionals have reportedly fallen victim to the scam, unaware that the government orders presented to them were counterfeit. Police are now working to identify the full scope of the fraud.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that, busting a major medical reimbursement scam, the Assam Police had arrested a health department employee who allegedly forged signatures of state-level medical referral board members for claiming reimbursement against fake medical bills. The official, who works at Khanapara State Dispensary in Guwahati, was produced before the court of the chief judicial magistrate, Kamrup, and he has been taken into police custody for seven days for investigation.
