Anaesthesiologist from Kolkata Rescues Passenger at Airport

Kolkata: A Howrah-based anaesthesiologist saved the life of a 60-year-old man who collapsed and became unresponsive at Mumbai’s Terminal 1 airport on Monday.

According to the news reports, Dr. Diptasree Ray, an anaesthesiologist, was in the boarding queue, waiting to fly back to Kolkata, when she witnessed the man collapse nearby. Without hesitation, she sprang into action, clearing the crowd and quickly assessing the patient's condition. Speaking to TOI, Ray said, "The man, who was around 60, gasped, turned unresponsive, and became pulseless."

Without hesitation, she cleared the crowd and began performing CPR, swiftly assessing the patient's condition. Another anaesthesiologist from a Mumbai hospital also stepped in to assist. With minimal medical equipment—no oxygen or suction—the two doctors administered repeated chest compressions, airway support, adrenaline shots, and used a defibrillator in a desperate attempt to revive him.

According to TOI, “In about 20 minutes, a faint pulse was felt, and the man opened his eyes. His heart started beating. I was relieved that our effort had paid off," Ray said. "He had a history of heart attacks." The man was sent to a Mumbai hospital.

Dr. Ray is an alumna of Midnapore Medical College and completed her postgraduate studies at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMCH). Until recently, she worked at Manipal Hospital EM Bypass, Kolkata.

Her former colleague, Dr. Dipanjan Chatterjee, a critical care specialist, praised her swift action and said that she demonstrated the spirit of countless unsung heroes working behind the scenes.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that a doctor is being hailed as a hero after her quick intervention and timely Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) saved a 60-year-old man who suffered a heart attack at Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal 2. A video of the doctor's heroic efforts went viral on social media, drawing admiration from the public.
