Jamshedpur Medical College enforces dress code for doctors, paramedical staff
Jamshedpur: Doctors, paramedical staff and other employees at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital (MGMMCH) will now be required to wear the prescribed uniform while on duty. The rule will be implemented across the hospital from this week to help patients and their attendants easily identify staff members.
The decision follows a Directorate of Medical Education directive issued on August 20, directing medical staff to follow the prescribed dress code. MGMMCH has instructed all department heads to ensure compliance.
The dress code will apply across the OPD, hospital wards and the medical college campus. Doctors will be required to wear aprons during duty hours, while other employees will have to wear the prescribed professional attire.
Hospital officials said that with thousands of patients visiting the facility every day, identifying doctors and other staff can become difficult, especially when the wards are crowded. The uniform is expected to make it easier for patients and their attendants to approach the right staff member.
The directorate of medical education on Aug 20 instructed all on-administrative medical personnel to mandatorily follow the prescribed dress code. Accordingly, orders have been issued to all heads of departments (HoDs) on Sunday to ensure that doctors and paramedical staff wear their uniforms to work,” Dr Sanjay Kumar, MGMMCH principal, said, reports TOI.
Staff members who do not follow the dress code during duty hours may face disciplinary action, the hospital administration said.
According to the Times of India, hospital sources said dress codes had been in force in the past as well, but the rules were not effectively implemented. The move comes amid concerns over discipline and staff availability at the hospital.
The move follows the August 17 death of a 12-year-old boy in the PICU, after allegations that a doctor was not available on duty and that this contributed to a delay in treatment. The incident led the Directorate of Medical Education to issue fresh instructions to the hospital.
