KEM Hospital Assistant Professor found dead at his residence in Thane
Thane: In an alleged case of suicide, a 46-year-old doctor was found dead after he hung himself at his residence in Maharashtra’s Thane city, he resigned as an Assistant Professor from civic-run KEM hospital in Mumbai a month back, an official said on Saturday.
Around 9 am on Friday, the doctor’s driver went to his home in the Manpada area to pick him up but got no response from him, said the official.
The driver then alerted his wife, who came and opened the door and found the body hanging from a ceiling fan, said senior inspector Girish Gode of the Chitalsar police station. He was declared brought dead at a hospital.
The deceased, who worked as an assistant professor at the Community Medicine department of KEM hospital, had resigned from his job and his resignation was accepted on February 17, said the official.
The doctor’s wife and children had been living separately for the past few weeks. He was apparently drinking too much, said the official citing a preliminary investigation. Girish Gode, senior police inspector, Chitalsar police station said, "He has been drinking for the last 15 years and he has two children studying in 12th standard. Due to his drinking habit, his wife left him and he was staying with his mother for the last few days. Also, the children were preparing for the HSC board examination."
Talking about his resignation, an officer told the Hindustan Times, "That could be one of the reasons why he felt mentally depressed. According to his family, he was not suffering from any ailments."
According to the dean of the KEM hospital, after the doctor had applied for resignation, his wife had intervened and told the administration to not accept the resignation letter on the day he attempted suicide. Dr Sangeeta Ravat, dean, KEM Hospital told the Free Press Journal, "His wife came to us in the morning with the letter of request and we accepted it. He was a popular teacher in the community medicine department. We were happy that he decided to stay back. The news of his death has shocked us."
A will was found near the body, said police. In the will, the doctor said that all his properties be transferred to his wife’s name, said the official.
The police suspect that the doctor ended his life on Thursday night. Gode said, "We have found a suicide note in which he has said he was giving away his property to his wife." The police have sent the body for postmortem and have registered a case under the Accidental Death Report (ADR).
