KEM PG Medico ends life by injecting self with drug at TB hospital
Mumbai: In an unfortunate incident, a 24-year-old doctor pursuing his postgraduate degree allegedly committed suicide by injecting himself with a drug at the civic-run Tuberculosis Hospital in Sewri on Monday morning.
The doctor hailed from Jalgaon in northern Maharashtra and was pursuing an MD degree at KEM Hospital in Parel, police said.
The incident took place on Sunday when Patil was deputed on duty at TB Hospital in Sewri area of central Mumbai, he said.
On Monday morning, Patil was found unconscious in the restroom of the hospital, where two wards are reserved for patients of KEM Hospital undergoing treatment for tuberculosis, the official said.
The doctor was rushed to KEM Hospital, but declared dead, he said.
Dean Dr Sangeeta Ravat informed TOI, the doctor was a bright and highly diligent student, known for his sincerity. The Dean said he was also set to make a presentation on his thesis subject in front of the board on Monday.
Following the incident, the hospital authorities spoke to his colleagues, who informed them that he might have been experiencing "mental distress".
The police recovered a syringe and two vials of a drug, which the doctor allegedly injected himself with and it proved fatal, the official said, adding that a case of accidental death has been registered at Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Marg police station.
“There were five vials on the bed and two had been opened and it appears that the doctor had injected two vials through syringes,” said a police officer, reports HT.
“The poisonous injections used for suicide are sent to the forensic science laboratory for chemical analysis. His mobile phone is also being checked to ascertain the reason behind the extreme step,” senior inspector Nimbalkar added. According to the police, the doctor is a native of Jalgaon district in Maharashtra and after completing his MBBS, he was pursuing MD and was in the first year of the master’s programme at KEM Hospital.
