Maha: DY Patil Hospital Doctor assaulted by 96-year-old patient's kin
Pune: A doctor associated with the DY Patil Hospital, Pimpri, was allegedly thrashed by a 96-year-old patient's kin over a dispute regarding surgery, who was admitted to the hospital for his waist injury.
The patient has been identified as Kalidas Gajanan Puranik. The doctor, identified as Dr. Sivappa Ravindra Devarma, aged 26, is working as an assistant medical officer at DY Patil Hospital and was informed of a patient who was admitted to the hospital with his waist fractured.
The incident occurred on September 22 when Dr. Devarma was checking patients at the orthopedic ward, and the family members of the patient asked him to treat his waist injuries.

Following this, Dr. Devarma asked the family members to consult with a cardiac specialist. The accused, Durgesh Rajan Puranik, aged 28 threatened the doctor to treat the patient. Durgesh was the grandson of the patient. He asked the doctor to call for a specialist at the ward in which he was admitted. He also told the doctor that his grandfather won't move anywhere.
Both the doctor and the accused were in a heated argument when the accused allegedly assaulted and thrashed the doctor. The entire scenario happened at 9.45 pm, HT reports.
Later, Dr Devarma filed a report at the Pimpri police station. A case was registered under sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the Indian Penal Code, and section 4 of the Maharashtra Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention Of violence and Damage Or Loss to Property) Act, 2010.
Shankar Awtade, the senior police inspector, said that the accused assaulted the doctor after there were heated arguments. The case is currently being investigated by Police inspector S Kokate.
However, violence against doctors has become more common and this should be a subject of concern. Therefore, the government should take necessary action in order to prevent such cases in the future.
