Man held for duping doctor of Rs 5000 for issuing fake legal heir certificate

Coimbatore: A middle-aged man has been arrested for duping a female doctor of Rs 5,000 on the pretext of providing a legal heir certificate.

The accused has been identified as 47-year-old R Kesavamani, a resident of Kalaiyanur in Chinna Thadagam, who was imposing as a Coimbatore North taluk employee and defrauded the doctor.

The doctor identified as Elizabeth wanted to get a legal heir certificate from the Taluk office. In March, she visited the office and came in contact with the accused who assured her of getting the certificate. Claiming that he worked at the office, he took around 5,000 and provided a fake certificate to her.

An investigating police officer told TOI, "On March 12, the accused applied for the certificate at an e-service centre near the Coimbatore corporation north zone office and obtained it on April 20."

Spotting a mistake in the certificate, the doctor with her brother Mohan George Mathew contacted the accused and asked him to correct the mistake. The accused said that in order to make changes to the certificate an amount of 10,000 will be charged.

Getting suspicious of the act, the doctor approached the office and got to know that the accused was not an employee at the office. Her brother then approached the collector G S Sameeran on Monday stating the incident.

Sameeran was at a grievance meeting that day and informed the deputy tahsildar of Coimbatore North taluk office, T Lakshmi Narayanan to probe the matter. After an enquiry, the deputy found that the accused was a fraud and cheated the doctor.

Later, the deputy filed a complaint against the accused and the case was registered under Sections 170 and 417 of the IPC. The case was registered by Sub-inspector Sainaba.

However, the accused is in custody now and further investigation is underway.
