Reeling under Children's education Debt, MP doctor couple commits suicide
Bhopal: In a shocking incident, a middle-aged doctor couple allegedly committed suicide at their house in Madhya Pradesh's Sagar district on Saturday due to the harassment they endured from private banks and financial institutions after failing to repay loans worth crores of rupees.
According to the police, the doctor committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling and his wife who is also a doctor was found dead lying on the bed. Prima facie, it appears that the woman had died after consuming or injecting herself with a poisonous substance as an empty string and cotton were found on the bed.
Although the exact cause of their death would be known after the post-mortem reports, a two-page suicide note was found in the room, in which the couple mentioned that they were worried about an outstanding debt.
The couple was in outstanding debt as they took loans for their children's education which at a point they were unable to pay following which the private banks and the financial institutions pressurised them.
It was discovered that their only daughter who was preparing for medical entrance exams also committed suicide possibly due to acute depression three years ago.
The deceased doctor was posted at the Community Health Centre in Kurwai of Vidisha district, about 20km from Bina, and his wife was a gynaecologist at Bina Civil Hospital. They were found dead in their house located in Nandan Colony in Bina town, some 70 km from the district headquarters, a police official said, PTI reports.
It was their son who discovered their bodies after returning home for a short vacation on Saturday morning since he stayed out of town due to his MBBS studies at AIIMS Patna.
According to TNIE news reports, the son had talked with his father over the phone at 10 pm the previous night informing them that he would come home in the next few days. While he was in the conversation, the son discovered no sense of panic or distress from his father. However, the day he arrived at his home, he noticed that the doors were open. After he entered their room, he was shocked to discover his parent's lifeless bodies.
Following this, he immediately informed the police. Upon receiving information, the police recovered the bodies and sent them for a post-mortem on Saturday.
A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
