MP doctor dies while trying to save 13-year-old girl from drowning
Singrauli: A joyful outing turned into a devastating tragedy on Sunday afternoon when a doctor heroically attempted to save a 13-year-old girl from drowning in the Gopad River, only to lose his life in the process.
The victims have been identified as a physician at the Northern Coalfields Hospital, and the daughter of another NCL doctor. The incident occurred during a family picnic involving 15 to 16 individuals from five families who had gathered at the picturesque riverbank in the Langhadol region of Singrauli, located approximately 730 kilometres from Bhopal and near the Uttar Pradesh border, reports Times of India.
Witnesses reported that the group was enjoying a sunny afternoon by the river when the tragedy unfolded. Some of them were engaged in cooking while some others were taking a bath in the river.
According to police officials, the incident began when the girl accidentally lost her balance and fell into a particularly deep section of the river. As she struggled against the current, her father, along with two other doctors, wasted no time in jumping into the water to rescue her. Eyewitnesses described a scene of panic and desperation as family members and other picnickers looked on in horror, helplessly watching the unfolding drama.
Despite their brave efforts, the situation quickly escalated beyond control. Family members managed to pull the father of the girl and another doctor out of the water, but neither the girl nor one of the doctors who jumped to save her could be reached in time. Tragically, both sank beneath the surface, leaving onlookers in shock and disbelief.
According to Free Press Journal, Singrauli SDO(P) Rahul Shaiyam said the incident occurred near Gopad River under Langhadol police station limits. “Dr Harish Singh drowned and his body was fished out. Search is underway for the girl, who is still missing. SDRF team has been deployed to trace her,” SDO(P) Rahul Shaiyam said.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with many expressing their sorrow and disbelief over the loss of life. Local authorities are urging residents to exercise caution when engaging in water-related activities, especially in areas where currents can be unpredictable.
