Mumbai: Senior doctor attempts suicide, saved by police intervention
Mumbai: A 74-year old Matunga-based doctor was rescued by the police on Monday while he was trying to attempt suicide by consuming around 80 tablets of medication over an alleged dispute with his spouse.
The information to the police was given by the daughter of the doctor who is in the US, as the latter had informed his daughter about his attempt by sending her a letter. The police immediately reached the spot, and found him by breaking his doors, reports the Free Press Journal.

He was admitted to Sion hospital where he is undergoing treatment currently. According to the police, the senior citizen is a resident of Kesar Kunj in Matunga, whose 42-year-old daughter is living in the United States with her sister and mother.
Neeta Phadke, assistant commissioner of police, Matunga Division said, "Shivani, who is in the US, messaged us on Monday evening at 4:30 pm and informed us that her father stays alone. She received a letter from her father. When she called him up, he said he has taken 80 tablets of a certain medication to commit suicide. She requested to check the health and her father's status."
The assistant commissioner further said that they formed a team comprising of police sub-inspector, Ahirrao under the guidance of Deepak Chavan, senior police inspector, Matunga police station as soon as they received the message from the doctor's daughter, following which they immediately reached the spot. She added, "The team reached the spot to find the door locked. They broke the doors to find the senior citizens. He was immediately shifted to Sion hospital. The doctors said he is stable and is underling treatment. Almost after an hour, a known relative reached the hospital, as the family is in hospital. We are investigating the matter."
The police also found a note written by the doctor from the spot, where he had written that he was going through depression attributing the reason to the attitude of his spouse. The note states, "Even after saying sorry she shouted in a loud voice and that too for a long time. Not one day has passed without scolding or insulting him. I have sent the letter copy to my daughter and brother. So that action is taken against her if anything happens to me."
As per the police, the doctor had earlier approached the police once to file a complaint against his spouse, however, they were counseled by the team to return back together, reports the Free Press Journal. However, the ACP, Phadke had shared her personal contact information with the spouse of the doctor at that time, to report if any issue comes up in the future.
And when the current incident took place, the daughter took the number of the ACP from her mother, and informed them of her father's suicide attempt, following which he was found by the police and admitted to the Sion hospital.
