Pune gynaecologist faces departmental inquiry after arrest in illegal abortion case

Maharashtra Health Department to Review Service Record of Arrested Gynaecologist
Pune: Following recent developments in the alleged illegal abortion case in Pune district, the Maharashtra public health department is set to initiate a departmental inquiry against the gynaecologist who was recently arrested. The proposed inquiry will examine his conduct during nearly 25 years of service in the department, including allegations of professional misconduct and possible violations of government service rules.
The doctor, who previously served as a medical officer at the rural hospital in Yavat, reportedly sought voluntary retirement on June 5, 2025. However, officials stated that his request was not accepted by the government. Despite this, he allegedly stopped reporting for duty and subsequently began private practice.

He was arrested by the Daund police on June 7 in connection with an alleged illegal abortion racket operating in the region. In a parallel development, a second FIR was registered against him and his wife at the Uruli Kanchan police station on June 11. The case pertains to alleged violations of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act at a private hospital.
Medical Dialogues had previously reported that the Pune Rural Police have registered a second FIR against a gynaecologist and his wife for alleged violations of the Pre-conception and Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act at their hospital located in Uruli Kanchan, Maharashtra. A few days earlier, the Daund Court had remanded the gynaecologist to police custody in connection with an alleged illegal abortion.
Speaking to Hindustan Times, Pune district civil surgeon Dr Nagnath Yempalle said the district health administration will recommend a formal departmental inquiry to the state government, which will appoint a committee to examine the doctor’s service record and determine whether any malpractice or service-rule violations occurred during his tenure.
Officials clarified that the departmental inquiry will be independent of the ongoing criminal investigations by the Daund and Uruli Kanchan police.
