Pune: In a shocking incident, nine members of the Doctor's family have been found dead in Maharashtra's Sangli, 13 people were arrested and 25 people have been booked for allegedly troubling the family members over repayment of loans, Sangli SP Dixit Gedam said.

According to preliminary reports, the nine members of the doctor's family allegedly committed suicide by consuming a poisonous substance in their home at Mhaisal in Miraj taluka of Sangli district in western Maharashtra.

As per the initial investigation, the motive behind the suicide by the family is said to be an economic hardship, police said.

The family was in tension due to the financial crisis and because of this they all drank the poisonous substance together and ended their lives.

A suicide note that was found on the scene, revealed that they were troubled by some private money lenders from whom they had borrowed money, SP Dixit Gedam told news agency ANI.

Police had identified the deceased victims as Popat Yallappa Vanmore (52), a veterinary doctor by profession, Sangeeta Popat Vanmore (48), Archana Popat Vanmore (30), Shubham Popat Vanmore (28), Manik Yallappa Vanmore (49), Rekha Manik Vanmore (45) and Aditya Manik Van (15), Anita Manik Vanmore (28) and Akkatai Vanmore (72).

According to reports, neither house's doors have been opened since Monday morning. Neighbours noted that the door to the residence in Ambika Nagar Chowk had not been opened since the morning. They knocked on the door, and when no one answered, they forced it open, discovering six people dead inside. The bodies of the remaining three were discovered later near Rajdhani Corner in another residence.

"The Vanmore brothers and a few other family members had borrowed money from the accused moneylenders at a high-interest rate. Despite the fact that they were paying the interest on time, the lenders and other accused parties harassed them verbally and physically on a daily basis. After the pressure grew unbearable, the victims took their own lives," Ajay Sindkar, Police Inspector, Local Crime Branch said.

When asked if the incident looks similar to Delhi's Burari deaths, SP Gedam Dixit said, "Police will be investigating the matter from all angles but prima facie it looks like a case of suicide due to loan."
