Telangana medical council inspects multiple clinics over unauthorised medical practice

Hyderabad: As part of its ongoing crackdown on the unauthorised practice of medicine, the Telangana Medical Council (TGMC) conducted surprise inspections at clinics, nursing homes, hospitals and diagnostic centres in Kalwakurthy and Amangal mandals on October 2.
Medical Dialogues had previously reported that in a move to curb illegal medical practice by unqualified practitioners, the Telangana State Medical Council (TGMC) on Thursday conducted raids at four unlicensed clinics in Kamareddy district. The inspection team was led by TGMC chairman Dr K Mahesh Kumar and vice-chairman Dr T Kiran Kumar.

According to the news reports, TGMC members Dr. G. Srinivas and Dr. Imran Ali carried out the inspections and reportedly identified several instances in which individuals were allegedly practising modern medicine or prescribing allopathic medicines without the required qualifications or registration.
At K. Swamy Homeo Care and Clinic, the accused, who holds a B.Com qualification, was allegedly found practising modern medicine. At Sri Lakshmi Clinic, an Intermediate-qualified practitioner was allegedly providing allopathic treatment, with antibiotics, antifungals and dexamethasone injections at the premises. At Life Care Polyclinic, a Pharm D graduate was allegedly prescribing allopathic medicines at three clinics. The inspection team also noted deficiencies in biomedical waste management. At Pranith Clinic, the man, who holds a B.Com degree, was allegedly prescribing antibiotics, painkillers and steroids, the TGMC said, reports the Hindu.
The inspection team further alleged that an Intermediate-qualified practitioner at Sri Vijaya Clinic was prescribing allopathic medicines. At JJ Health Clinic, the accused was allegedly practising modern medicine using the name of Kasireddy Sindhu. He was reportedly absent from the premises when the inspection was conducted.
At Swapna Clinic, a BAMS practitioner was allegedly treating patients and issuing prescriptions in the name of an MBBS doctor.
The council also inspected diagnostic centres where it found that laboratory tests were being conducted and reports issued without review or authorisation by qualified doctors in MD Pathology, Biochemistry or Microbiology.
At Soujanya Nursing Home, registered in the name of an MBBS doctor, a BHMS practitioner was allegedly providing allopathic medicines and paediatric treatment. At Mahalakshmi Hospital, registered in the name of a BHMS practitioner, was allegedly administering antibiotics, intravenous fluids and other allopathic medicines.
The inspection team further reported an alleged case of unauthorised medical practice at Mother Theresa First Aid Centre, where the accused, who had studied up to Class 10, was allegedly practising modern medicine.
At Sri Ram Clinic, the accused, who holds a degree, was also allegedly found practising modern medicine without the required qualifications or registration.
Speaking to the Hindu, Dr Srinivas said, “Criminal cases and other appropriate legal action are being initiated against those practising modern medicine without authorisation under Section 22 of the Telangana Medical Practitioners Registration Act and Sections 34 and 54 of the National Medical Commission Act.”
