TN Govt doctors to launch Non-Cooperation protest from January 30

Chennai: Government doctors affiliated with the Federation of Government Doctors Associations (FOGDA) will launch a non-cooperation movement from January 30, 2026, to intensify their protest over a slew of unmet demands.
As part of their protest, the doctors have decided to boycott biometric attendance, stay away from online and offline official meetings, discontinue theory, practical, and clinical classes, and exit official WhatsApp groups.
The decision follows a 48-hour token relay fast launched on Wednesday by FOGDA to press the State government to act on a set of demands that have remained unresolved for years. These include a review of Government Order 354 relating to pay structure and promotions, addressing the compression of Pay Band 4, granting a Rs 3,000 allowance to medical officers posted at Primary Health Centres (PHCs), and implementing standalone postgraduate increments.
The Hindu has reported that while initiating the protest, the doctors alleged that the police prevented them from commencing the “token fast” within the premises of Government Stanley Medical College Hospital (SMCH). Faculty members and service postgraduate doctors gathered in protest against the alleged action, prompting the Deputy Commissioner of Police to intervene and escalate the issue to senior officials. The fast was subsequently allowed to continue.
Later in the day, on Wednesday, the FOGDA convenors were called to talks with government officials. The meeting, chaired by the Health Secretary, highlighted that the government was awaiting a response from the Finance Department on the doctors’ demands.
FOGDA has earlier warned that any attempt to curb their democratic form of protest would result in an escalation of the agitation, including a fast unto death and an advancement of the non-cooperation movement.
