UP doctor held for allegedly raping woman on pretext of marriage

Lucknow: A 38-year-old doctor from Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, has been arrested under charges of rape following an incident where the woman attempted suicide after being rejected for marriage by him.
The doctor was accused of sexually assaulting the complainant for two years under the pretence of marriage. However, he was apprehended based on a complaint filed by the woman after she was rescued from the Gomti River, where she had attempted suicide.
The woman is a student at a college in Lucknow who alleged that she was raped by the accused doctor on multiple occasions for the past two years. However, the incident took a tragic turn when the doctor rejected her marriage proposal.
Following the rejection, the woman went to the Gomti River on Monday and jumped into the river. The locals who noticed her jumping into the river immediately alerted the nearby drivers who promptly rescued her.
According to the Indian Express news report, she was rushed to a nearby hospital where the doctors examined her and gave her immediate medical treatment. The police also reached the scene and recorded the woman's statements.
Later, the woman filed a complaint at the police station and a case was registered. When the police interrogated the doctor based on the allegation, he could not respond satisfactorily to their questions. This resulted in the arrest of the doctor under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
