Varanasi urologist found dead on medical college campus, injection recovered

Varanasi: A 40-year-old urologist was found dead in his accommodation at a private medical college in Varanasi, with police suspecting suicide after he allegedly injected himself with a poisonous substance.

The doctor had attended to patients in the outpatient department on Saturday before returning to his room on the hospital campus. Police said he later spoke to his wife over the phone, following which a dispute reportedly escalated.

He lived alone in the accommodation provided on the hospital campus and usually had dinner at the hospital canteen. When he did not turn up for dinner that night, a security guard became concerned and informed other hospital staff.

Fellow doctors subsequently tried to contact him and knocked on his door, but received no response. When there was still no movement, they looked through a window and found him lying on the bed. The police were informed and reached the spot shortly afterwards.

Police found the doctor's body lying on the bed in the room. An injection and a mobile phone were lying nearby. Along with inspecting the scene, police took the items found in the room into their possession. A preliminary investigation suggested that the doctor had ended his life by injecting himself with a poisonous substance, reports Bhaskar English.

Police have so far been examining a possible family dispute as a reason behind the suspected suicide. Hospital colleagues also reportedly told investigators that the doctor had appeared troubled and that there had been a change in his behaviour in the days preceding his death.

His family members were informed and travelled from Bihar to Varanasi after receiving news of the incident.

The body has been sent for post-mortem examination. Police said the exact cause and circumstances of death would be clearer after the post-mortem findings, while further investigation is underway.
