Youth dies by suicide after alleged harassment at RIMS Adilabad; doctor, nurse booked

Adilabad: In a shocking incident, a doctor and a staff nurse from the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Adilabad, along with a police constable, have been booked for allegedly abetting the suicide of a 26-year-old man and abusing him using his caste name, police said on Thursday.
According to the news reports, Adilabad Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) L Jeevan Reddy said a case was registered against the accused doctor, staff nurse and II Town Head Constable under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), pertaining to abetment of suicide, along with relevant provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The youth was admitted to RIMS on Wednesday after being bitten by a scorpion. However, he allegedly died by suicide by hanging on Thursday morning after reportedly feeling humiliated over an incident in which he was allegedly reprimanded and harassed by hospital staff and police for recording a video on his mobile phone highlighting alleged negligence in his treatment.
A purported suicide note recovered after his death allegedly stated that he was subjected to torture by police personnel at the instructions of doctors from RIMS.
Speaking to PTI, police claimed there was no truth to the allegation that the deceased was beaten up at the police station, saying video proof was available in this connection.
Following his suicide, his family members and Dalit organizations staged a protest seeking justice and demanding action against the staffers and police at RIMS on Thursday. This protest prompted the registration of a case against those who allegedly drove the youngster to die by suicide, reports Telangana Today.
Meanwhile, BJP MLA Payal Shankar demanded a time-bound inquiry into the incident, pointing out that the deceased was the family's breadwinner. He criticised the hospital staff for allegedly approaching the police against the youth and demanded a job for one of the family members, an ex-gratia of Rs 50 lakh and an inquiry by a high-level committee.
