2 women die after C-sections at Bundi Hospital, doctor transferred amid probe

Jaipur: The Rajasthan government has constituted a four-member inquiry committee to investigate the deaths of two women following cesarean sections at the General Hospital in Bundi. The committee has been directed to submit its report within two days.
Meanwhile, the Medical Department has transferred the doctor who performed the cesarean sections from the Women's Hospital in Bundi to Kota. The department said the transfer was made to ensure that the investigation remains unaffected.

The transfer has drawn objections from medical organisations, with the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and the All Rajasthan Serving Medical Association submitting a memorandum to the District Collector. The associations said action against a doctor before completion of the inquiry was inappropriate and warned of agitation if the transfer order was not withdrawn.
Speaking to ETV Bharat, Dr Anil Jangid, associated with the IMA, said the doctor has been in medical service for nearly 15 years. "She has performed several surgeries on women. Therefore, an impartial investigation of the entire matter is necessary before reaching any conclusion," he said.
Dr Jagdish Prasad Soni, Joint Director of the Medical Department, Kota, said the lady doctor had been instructed to report to the Kota office for the time being. He said further action would be decided based on the findings of the investigation.
According to PMO Laxminarayan, the woman, available medical records indicate that one of the women developed postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) after undergoing a caesarean section. She had been admitted to the General Hospital, Bundi, on September 15 at around eight-and-a-half months of pregnancy. Due to the baby's transverse position, a caesarean delivery was performed, following which she delivered a girl weighing approximately 2.8 kg.
The PMO said the woman later developed complications and was treated with balloon tamponade, medication, and blood transfusion to control the bleeding. As her condition remained critical and required advanced treatment, she was referred to a higher medical institution. Her death was subsequently recorded in Kota on September 17.
He said in the second case, the patient experienced breathing difficulties after the cesarean delivery. Following medical examination and necessary treatment, she was referred to a higher medical institution. The final medical cause of death in both cases will be determined based on the investigation committee's report.
The PMO said in the second case, the patient was admitted to the General Hospital, Bundi, on September 16. At approximately 12:12 pm, she delivered a baby boy weighing 2.2 kilograms. Later, at approximately 3:40 pm, she developed vaginal bleeding. "The on-duty physician initiated immediate treatment, administering balloon tamponade, medications, and blood transfusions to manage PPH. Due to the bleeding not being controlled and the lack of HDU/ICU facilities, the woman was referred to a higher medical institution for better treatment. One unit of blood was transfused before referral," he said, reports ETV Bharat.
The four-member committee formed by the Principal of Kota Government Medical College comprises Dr Usha Dadiya, Professor of Anaesthesiology; Dr Pankaj Jain, Professor of Medicine; Dr Rahul Agarwal, Associate Professor of Microbiology; and Dr Aushima Vijay, Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
The committee has reached the Bundi Women's Hospital and begun examining the cases. It is looking into the cesarean procedures, subsequent deterioration in the women's health, referrals and the treatment provided before their deaths in Kota.
Dr NL Meena, PMO of Bundi District Hospital, said a separate investigation team was also formed under the leadership of the SDM on the instructions of the District Collector. The incident is also being investigated at the hospital level.
