200-bed super speciality hospital planned in Pune under PRAGATI project

Pune: A 200-bed superspeciality hospital will be established at the Aundh District Hospital (ADH) campus under the Maharashtra government’s PRAGATI Primary Healthcare Reimagined with Advanced Governance and Accessible Technology Integration) health project, officials said on Thursday.

According to the news reports, the proposed hospital will provide specialised services in neurosurgery, oncology, cardiology, gynaecology and neonatology, among other specialities. The state government has approved 772 posts for the Pune facility, with the annual salary expenditure estimated at around Rs 60.33 crore.

The Pune district civil surgeon had submitted a proposal to the state government in January 2025 seeking approval for a 200-bed superspeciality hospital and a separate 200-bed women’s hospital. The proposal envisaged 772 posts for the two facilities and an estimated project cost of Rs 1,527 crore.

Speaking to the Hindustan Times, Pune district civil surgeon Dr Nitin Deomane said, “Considering the rapidly growing population of Pune district, Sassoon General Hospital is facing considerable pressure while providing medical services. There is therefore a need for a 200-bed superspeciality hospital and a 200-bed women’s hospital for Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.”

The Pune project is among five major hospital initiatives approved under the PRAGATI programme. The plan also includes the construction of 500-bed district hospitals in Kolhapur and Nanded.

Officials said the project will also upgrade district hospitals in Nagpur and Latur from 100 beds to 300 beds.

The new infrastructure is expected to expand access to specialised healthcare services and strengthen the public healthcare network in Pune district.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is planning to upgrade nine civic hospitals to strengthen maternal care services by equipping them with facilities including modular operation theatres, intensive care units and neonatal intensive care units. The initiative aims to strengthen treatment services and reduce the need to refer patients to private and tertiary-care hospitals.
