5 women suffer Delirium after C-sections at MP Hospital, Bupivacaine use halted
Five Post-C-Section Patients Develop Delirium at Sanjay Gandhi Medical College Hospital
Bhopal: In a shocking incident at the Sanjay Gandhi Medical College Hospital in the Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh, five women in the 20-25 age group went into a state of delirium shortly after undergoing cesarean section (C-section) deliveries. This alarming situation has prompted the hospital authorities to launch a multi-departmental investigation to determine the cause of the condition.
Delirium, a sudden and severe mental condition marked by confusion, disorientation, and an inability to think clearly, has left both medical staff and the families of the patients deeply worried.
According to the news reports, the women, who are residents of Rewa, Panna, and neighboring districts, delivered via C-section on Thursday evening. Since then, they have exhibited symptoms of delirium. Two of these women have been transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for closer monitoring, while the others remain under observation at the hospital.

Similarly, Ambuj Gupta, a resident of Rewa, shared his concern about his wife, who also had a C-section the same night. Gupta mentioned that she was only partially conscious and unresponsive to both the family and hospital staff. He added that they were unsure of what to do, as she appeared to have lost her memory.
Dr. Rahul Mishra, the superintendent of Sanjay Gandhi Medical College Hospital, confirmed the reports and assured that a thorough investigation is underway.

Speaking to TNIE, Dr Mishra said, “We’ve ordered a thorough investigation into this matter, as 4-5 of the 8 women who underwent C-sections have experienced delirium. Two have been shifted to the ICU for intensive care. However, all five women, including the two in the ICU, are not in danger.”
A team of specialists, including experts in gynecology, anesthesia, and neurology, is closely monitoring the patients' conditions and conducting thorough investigations.
"Efforts are on to find out why these women suffered memory loss. The medicines administered to them during the Caesarean procedure as well as the anesthesia dose are being scrutinized. We feel it may be a reaction to the drug 'Bupivacaine', which is used in spinal anesthesia. Its use has been stopped at the hospital for now, and samples have been sent for pharmacovigilance to Kolkata," Dr Mishra informed, reports PTI.
