80-year-old patient dies; family alleges negligence at Sindhanur Hospital

Sindhanur: The family of an elderly woman who died after allegedly being denied immediate treatment at the taluk hospital in Sindhanur town of Raichur district on Tuesday has accused the hospital of medical negligence, prompting a brief protest outside the premises.

According to the news reports, the 80-year-old woman, a resident of Mudgal town, was reportedly suffering from respiratory problems. She was brought to the Sindhanur taluk hospital for further treatment. However, her family members claimed that the hospital staff failed to provide immediate medical care.

Police personnel rushed to the spot soon after receiving information about the incident. The situation became tense for a while as the grieving relatives engaged in heated arguments with the police. Senior officers intervened and attempted to pacify the protesters while discussing the matter with hospital authorities.

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Suresh Gowda later met with the family members inside the hospital premises and explained the patient’s medical condition. He rejected the allegations of medical negligence.

Speaking to The Hindu, Dr. Suresh Gowda denied any medical negligence. He said that the patient’s condition was critical on arrival, as she was finding it difficult to breathe. The duty doctors provided treatment with nebulisation. However, the patient died due to cardiac arrest.

He further stated that the woman had a long history of heart-related ailments and had been undergoing treatment for those conditions. The doctor also noted that the duty doctors were attending to emergency patients in the Intensive Care Unit when she was brought in, but they still examined her and provided the required treatment.
