Bhiwandi: Protest over 'mismanagement', Villagers conduct 'death ritual' of IGM Hospital
Through the demonstration, the protesters tried to bring to the notice of the authorities the "mismanagement" prevailing at the hospital and lack of basic facilities there.
Thane: Several people protested outside the government-run Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital at Bhiwandi in Maharashtra's Thane district by conducting the "death ritual" of the medical facility over its "mismanagement".
Residents of adjoining villages on Friday brought a big portrait of the "dead" hospital and garlanded it before sitting down in front of the health care facility, where they performed the mock death rituals.
Through the demonstration, the protesters tried to bring to the notice of the authorities the "mismanagement" prevailing at the hospital and the lack of basic facilities there, some of the participants said.
The villagers of Bhiwandi in order to bring out the mismanagement of the hospital administration and also counting the lack of basic facilities in the government-run Indira Gandhi Memorial (IGM) hospital came up with a unique protest where they conducted the 'Death Ritual' of the hospital.
The villagers brought a giant portrait of the "dead" hospital and garlanded it before sitting down in front of the health care facility and also performed mock death rituals.
The Freepress Journal reports that Pramod Pawar, vice president of Shramjivi Sanghatana said, "The 'death rituals' type of protest was our idea because it seems that the IGM Hospital of Bhiwandi is dead. The hospital management and administration are neglecting all the basic services and even after several complaints, no action has been taken. We carried out the protest to put our problems in the ears of management and also the state government."
More than 100 villagers protested outside the hospital and demanded the facilities should be like other hospitals in the state i.e. KEM, Lokmanya Tilak Hospital in Sion, Nair Hospital in Mumbai Central and JJ Hospital in Byculla.
Later, a delegation of protesters met the hospital's superintendent, Dr Rajesh More, and held talks with him, who assured that the services will be improved.
Dr More also said that a 24x7 helpline would be made operational at the hospital with immediate effect and sufficient staff would be appointed to improve its functioning.
