Bhubaneshwar: Transfusion of 'wrong blood' kills 2 patients; probe ordered
patientsBhubaneshwar: Medical negligence complaint has been lodged against the Keonjhar district headquarters hospital (DHH) for administering the wrong blood to two patients during treatment resulting in their deaths.
The two patients have been identified as a 70-year-old Dama Munda, a resident of Kandarapasi village and 40-year-old Muni Sahu, a resident of Raisuan Sahi under Sadar block in Keonjhar district.
Dama Munda's story
On March 29, Dama was admitted to the district hospital at the orthopaedics ward but doctors after conducting tests on him discovered that he was suffering from Tuberculosis (TB) as well. Later he was shifted to the TB department. As per the statement of the family members, Dama was given B+ blood while his blood group was A+. After being infused with half a bottle of B+ blood the next day, Dama got A+ blood. Unfortunately, Munda died due to the complication of the wrong blood on May 11 after he was discharged from the hospital on April 3.
Later the family members of the deceased went to the police station and lodged a complaint of medical negligence against the hospital staff and doctors. They also demanded Rs 20 lakh compensation.

Suni Sahu's story
On May 13, Sahu was admitted to the district hospital where the nurse gave her two units of B+ blood. She was then taken to SCB Medical College and Hospital after her condition started to get worse. After conducting tests on her, it was found that she had AB+ blood. She died on May 29 during treatment at the SCB hospital.
Later the family members of the deceased lodged a complaint against the district hospital seeking strict action against the staff and the doctors.

In response to the incident, Keonjhar Chief District Health Officer (CDMO), Dr Sujata Rani Mishra has ordered an investigation. She also told Odishatv, "After the second incident, I came to know about both the cases. Though I can't accept it that such a huge blunder would have happened, I have ordered a probe."
