Bomb threat trigger alert at Ernakulum Medical College Hospital

Kochi: In a shocking incident, a bomb threat sent via email to the Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH), Ernakulum, triggered panic on Thursday, prompting an immediate police response and a detailed search of the premises. The threat was later confirmed to be a hoax.

The Kalamassery Police registered a case and launched an investigation after the hospital authorities received the email at the official address of the medical college principal.

According to the news reports, the message warned that an RDX explosion would occur on the hospital campus around 1.30 pm and claimed that the blast would damage the building and its facilities, endangering patients, doctors, and others present inside.

Acting swiftly, police teams along with the bomb squad carried out a thorough inspection of the hospital complex. After an extensive search, officials confirmed that no explosives or suspicious materials were found on the campus.

Speaking to TOI, the police said the email originated from an Outlook mail ID and threatened that the explosion would damage the building and facilities at the hospital and endanger those in the building, including patients and doctors.

In a similar incident, authorities at Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital received a bomb threat in January, which was later confirmed to be a hoax, leading to tightened security and surveillance across the campus.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that following a bomb threat email received by the authorities of Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital (MCH), security and surveillance across the campus have been significantly tightened. Police officials confirmed that multiple inspections by the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad found the threat to be a hoax, though heightened vigilance continues. According to preliminary investigations, the threatening email was received on January 7 at the official email address of Medical College Principal Sajeev Kumar.
