Ajmer: A shocking altercation broke out between a resident doctor and a male nurse at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital. While the doctor accused the nurse of physically assaulting him with a slipper and hitting his head with an iron plate, the nurse claimed that the doctor had verbally abused and slapped him. CCTV footage of the altercation has since gone viral on social media.

According to reports, the incident began when the doctor pointed out a nurse working without a mask in the NICU, which violated standard infection control protocols. This interaction escalated into a physical confrontation in the nursing in-charge's room.

Both parties have filed complaints against each other, staged protests demanding action and made conflicting accusations. Besides, the nursing staff have threatened to strike if any one-sided action is taken. In response, the principal initiated an investigation by forming a committee, which has been directed to submit its report soon.

The incident occurred around 9:30 AM in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). According to a latest media report by Bhaskar, the altercation started from a disagreement over compliance with NICU safety protocols. The viral video of the CCTV footage captured the duo engaging in a dispute which quickly escalated to a physical altercation.

Resident doctor Chandra Prakash reportedly asked a female nurse to wear a mask, keeping the health regulations for children in the ICU in mind. When the nurse allegedly failed to comply, Dr. Prakash approached the nursing in-charge, where the situation quickly intensified. Dr. Prakash alleged that male nurse Suresh Chaudhary misbehaved with him during their conversation.

Explaining the incident in detail, Dr Prakash told Bhaskar, "I was performing my morning duty and requested the staff to carry out certain tasks related to a child. When they ignored my instructions, I went to report it to the nursing in-charge. Male nurses Suresh and Vinod were present there."

He further alleged that Suresh hit him with a slipper and later assaulted him with an iron plate, while other nursing staff restrained him from defending himself. "It was an attempt to kill me. I will file a police complaint and demand the suspension of the nurse involved," Dr. Prakash added.

However, the nursing staff presented a contrasting version. Nurse Chaudhary stated that it was the doctor who initiated the violence after reportedly slapping him in the room in front of others.

"In the morning after arriving for duty, everyone's duties were being assigned. Meanwhile, resident doctor Prakash arrived and started asking the in-charge about masks. The in-charge's room was separate. During this, the doctor started shouting loudly. Even used abusive language. Attempts were made to explain to maintain peace. After this he slapped me. Then it led to a physical fight," he told the Daily.

Following the incident, both the nursing staff and resident doctors gathered in protest, demanding action.

Condemning the attack on the doctor, the Resident Doctors Association (RDA) extended their support to Dr Prakash and demanded justice for him. They alleged that he was wrongfully attacked and beaten by the nursing staff. Therefore, they won't stay still until an action has been taken in this regard.

"The doctor was performing his duty. Instructions were only given to staff related to the child. A complaint was made to the nursing staff in-charge. After this, nursing staff member Suresh grabbed and beat the doctor. Our colleague should get justice. Resident doctors are waiting until evening for action to be taken against the male nurse. If this does not happen, a meeting will be held to prepare the future course of action," said RDA President Dr Dilraj Meena.

Meanwhile, the nursing staff has threatened to go on strike if any one-sided action is taken against their colleague. Nursing Superintendent Chetan Meena said, "If one-sided action is taken, the nursing staff will go on strike."

In response to the incident, Principal Dr. Anil Samariya and Superintendent Dr. Arvind Khare intervened and questioned both the parties individually in the superintendent’s chamber.

Calling the incident "unfortunate," Dr. Samariya confirmed that a committee headed by senior doctor Sanjeev Maheshwari will investigate the matter. "The committee has been asked to submit a report soon. No one was injured in the incident," he confirmed.
