Clash erupts at Dera Bassi Hospital, 5 injured

Chandigarh: In a shocking turn of events that unfolded at Dera Bassi Civil Hospital in Punjab's Mohali, a violent clash between two groups left at least five people injured, officials said on Saturday. Following the incident, the doctors of the hospital went on a strike and staged a dharna.
A case has been registered in connection with the clash that took place late on Friday, they said.
According to the PTI report, a video purporting to show members of the two groups throwing hospital furniture, wheelchairs, flowerpots and other items at each other while patients and their attendants flee for safety became widely circulated on social media.
Hospital staff were forced to seek shelter in a room, while patients and their families ran to safety.
Health Minister Balbir Singh said an FIR had been registered against both parties involved.

Singh said he contacted the SAS Nagar deputy commissioner and the senior superintendent of police after learning about the clash and directed them to take appropriate action against both parties.
As per a media report in the TOI, Hospital authorities have reported significant damage to medical equipment and infrastructure during the clash. The hospital administration has filed a formal complaint regarding the vandalism and disruption of medical services.
All hospitals are considered peace zones and any violation of protocol or damage to public property will be met with strict action, regardless of political affiliation, he added.
Violence against any medical personnel and damage to hospital property is a non-bailable offence, Singh said in a statement.
He added the police had launched an investigation and were reviewing CCTV camera footage and gathering witness statements.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that a 20-year-old man was arrested by the Sivaganga police for allegedly assaulting a woman doctor who was undergoing a compulsory rotatory medical internship (CRMI) at Sivagangai Medical College Hospital. The incident has sparked widespread protests among intern doctors.
